As a self taught musician who found his first guitar in a dumpster at the age of 12, I was able to create a brand for myself in the music world. From writing, recording and producing the albums, to marketing on social media before it was a mainstream medium. I was able to build a career from the ground up and turn it into a world-wide product through licensing, album sales, sponsorships and musical compilations. All of this accomplished without Record-Label representation:
Ryan Huston was destined to be a musician. At the age of 12, Ryan was walking home from school and found an old guitar that someone had left by their trash. He instinctively rescued the guitar and took it to the local music shop to have it restrung. Over the next few years Ryan taught himself to play and write songs on that guitar and credits the somewhat damaged instrument for introducing him to his lifes passion. After years of home training Ryan decided to pursue his art more seriously and enrolled in a series of college level courses where he studied Music Theory, Music Composition, Music History, Piano and Sight Reading.
In 2005 Ryan recorded and released his debut LP Right Songs For No One. The record featured 16 songs which were written, performed and produced entirely by Ryan. Since its release Right Songs For No One has become an internet and independent sensation. Thanks to a growing legion of fans online Ryan had sold over 15,000 copies of his record in a little over a year with no official distribution and promotion based solely on word-of-mouth. His following continues to grow on a daily basis thanks in large part to his presence on MySpace and Facebook where he has over 3.5 million plays of his songs and over 185,000 "friends".
Word of this growing activity quickly spread to local, commercial radio and nationwide college radio. Ryan has done on-air interviews and in-studio performances at dozens various stations. He has had songs placed on TV networks such as Disney, Lifetime, MTV, ABC Family, CW, Cartoon Network, and The "N" as well as various film projects. He still has a growing live fan base routinely selling out shows. His song, "Thank You" was chosen by the people at TARGET to put on their compilation CD called, Acoustic Mood which was released on October 15th. Ryan was the only unsigned artist featured on that 17 track CD. After the release of Acoustic Mood, the programming director on SIRIUS Satellite Radio was overwhelmed with requests to play Ryan. "Thank You" is now currently being played daily on Acoustic Coffee House, Channel 30. Since then, three additional songs have also been added into the rotation. Ryan was also recently featured on a podcast by music industry powerhouse BMI which stacked him against 3 other artists in a battle-of-the-bands format in which the winner was determined by fans votes. Ryan more than doubled the record of votes for any artist that had been featured on any of the previous BMI podcasts and easily won the competition.
Huston was then brought to Los Angeles by acclaimed producer Chris Lee to record 7 songs that showcase his growing talent for compelling and meaningful songwriting. Music industry interest began brewing before the recordings were even completed. Ryan's follow up album "Ordinary Day" was released early December '07 and was quick to receive high marks and outstanding reviews. This album was also written, performed and produced entirely by Ryan. In June of 2008, Ryan signed with an independent sponsor, True Anthem, where he set a record as the most downloaded artist. A year later, he finished his third album, “This Life.” It was released in December ‘09 and featured such hits as “Love You Forever,” 'This Life' and “Beautiful Day.” Even as an unsigned artist with no label representation, he has licensed 10 separate songs to various television networks including:
MTV, (True Life Series, MADE series, When I was 17, Engaged and Underage)
Lifetime, (Lifetime Original Movie Girl Positive, Salem Falls, Monarch Cove)
